Learn To Play a Guitar on Your Own with These Simple Tips

by Gerry Restrivera
So you want to learn to play a guitar? Whether you want to be a rock god like Dave Navarro or just want to be a decent player to whip up a song during family reunions, learning to play the guitars is an admirable skill to have. But remember that no guitar player, great or not, was born knowing how to play. They too, started somewhere. And so can you.

Where to find your teacher You can pay someone to teach you personally or you can learn to play a guitar on your own. Simply buy an instructional book or video and learn to play a guitar from them. You can even take lessons from online sites, where there are hundreds of free or paid instructions. Whichever way you choose, all you'll need is a lot of interest and patience. Ready? Here's how to begin to play:

Get your own guitar. You can always borrow, but if you're serious about playing, might as well have your very own strings to practice on instead of sneaking in your brother's room and using his precious instrument. It doesn't have to be the most expensive guitar - as long as it's durable and playable; you can learn to play a guitar with it.

Now whether you should use an acoustic or an electric is really a matter of personal choice and budget. Most purists would probably recommend that you learn to play a guitar with an acoustic first and then progress to an electric guitar. Either way, make sure it's a six-string guitar that's well-tuned.

Know your guitar. To learn to play a guitar you should know your guitar. The guitar has several different parts. They are:

the head - which includes the tuning keys

fingerboard - includes the frets, fret bars and position marks

the body - includes the sound hole (with an acoustic), pick guard and bridge

So where are the strings? They start from the head tied tightly to the head and adjusted using the tuning keys. They run parallel to each other over the fingerboard and body where they are held in place by the bridge.

To learn how to play a guitar, you should also learn how all the parts work by themselves and together to create the guitar sounds. See how pressing on the strings and adjusting the string tension with the tuning keys change the sounds and effects. Fifteen to 30 minutes spent getting acquainted with your guitar will prove very useful later on when you learn how to play a guitar.

Get a chord book. Buy a good chord book from your local music shop or bookstore. It will contain all the guitar chords you'll need to learn to play a guitar. You can even rip off a page from one of those music magazines that include a complete chord chart in their issues and use that instead. It will look strange to you at first, but as you learn to play a guitar, every little dot and letter you find there will slowly make sense.

Learn the numbers. To learn to play a guitar you should also learn the numbers. The thumb is labeled 'T', forefinger is #1, middle finger is #2, ring finger is #3 and little finger is #4. The chord book uses these figures to indicate finger positioning on the guitar. A played string is called an open string and is usually indicated by 'O' while an unplayed string is called a dead string and is usually marked 'X'.

The six strings are numbered from 1 to 6 but they also have names - the thickest and lowest in pitch is 'E'. The next ones are A, D, G, B and the thinnest one with the highest pitch is the higher E, usually indicated as a small letter 'e'. Once you know these, you can start learning from your book, video, online lesson or on your own.

Practice. This isn't the tricky part - it's actually the fun part. To learn to play a guitar means practicing everyday or at least 5 days each week for at least 30 minutes. You'll grow calluses on your fingers, especially on the fret hand, but this is necessary to help you play effortlessly. Learn about changing hand positions, strumming and finger picking.

Build the muscles of your hands for flexibility and strength and learn to position your body properly for proper coordination. To learn to play a guitar is about teaching your hand and body muscles how to work with memory. Have fun and play beautiful music.

Guitar Lessons And You: Finding A System That Works

by IPRWire Staff Writer
Guitar lessons are a great way to learn all of the techniques that you need to become an accomplished musician. Whether you like to perform for your friends, play for yourself, or aspire to be a well-known musician who travels the world to play in front of audiences, you can get the knowledge that you need from a good class. Of course, the real challenge is in finding a class that will actually provide you with the information that you need for your skill level and musical interests. There is quality information out there, but you need to be really careful while trying to find it. Many programs mean well, but they can actually cause frustration and technical setbacks. Simply put, you need lessons that are high quality and from a respectable source.

It can be frustrating to find guitar lessons that will accommodate everyone from beginner to advanced, and this often leads to more frustration. Many people turn to their local music teacher to provide them with the knowledge that they need, as they progress from beginner to advanced. But having one-on-one instruction can be costly, especially if you are still struggling with a particular new skill that takes up more than one session. Personality compatibility is also important, in that the instructor's teaching style complements with your learning style. Group classes are an option because they are much cheaper, but you then sacrifice personalized attention and learning at your own pace.

Others attempt to teach themselves with guitar lessons in a self-guidance book. This can be great for some people, but, more often than not, it can be difficult to follow the book. Many individuals give up before they ever really get started. For many, this is just another frustrating step along the way to try to get the information that you need to be a well-balanced and knowledgeable musician.

Pro Guitar Tips is founded by Pete Williamson, an accomplished guitarist. A veteran in the music industry, he put all of his experience into a comprehensive set of guitar lessons that provide guidance for levels ranging from beginner to advanced. The program teaches chords and tab reading, and also improves playing style with tips on remembering scales and chords, incorporating arpeggios into solos, and tricks in playing lead guitar. The program is 100% multimedia based, with mp3 audio for every lesson, and detailed images and tab offer clear explanation of how and what to play, and how you should sound. Bonus material shows how to pursue a music career and get a great tone. Visit http://www.pro-guitar-tips.com to purchase the program or for more information.

Guitar Tips To Help You Succeed

by IPRWire Staff Writer
If you are a musician and you believe that you could benefit from learning new guitar tips, you are not alone. So many musicians are always looking for that one piece of advice or secret that will catapult them to the top of their musical game. There are many resources out there that will give you little tidbits that can help you be a better player overall, but if you have purchased or received free information in the past, you might have been let down. The problem with many of these resources is that they will provide you with information that is common knowledge or just does not apply to you, your skill level, or the type of music that you want to play the most. This can be frustrating, and you might start to feel as though there simply is not enough advice out there to help you be as good as you have always dreamed of being.

If you are looking for guitar tips, be sure to go with what fits your taste in music and general learning style. If you decide to go to a music teacher, make sure the instructor is open to teaching the particular genre you like, or, even better, specializes in it. Personality is also important in terms of compatibility. Hopefully, your instructor's style of teaching complements with how you learn. Having one-on-one instruction is advantageous, but it can be expensive and time consuming. It can also be a waste of your time if your teacher turns out to lack the knowledge, skills, and experience you expected. Make sure to check your teacher's credentials and even see him or her perform a song and decide for yourself if you feel confident to be under his or her instruction.

You will find that you can get guitar tips or courses online, but, generally, you probably cannot easily afford these courses that can cost $60, $70, $80, or even $100, and sometimes you are not really even sure what you are buying. Many of these also require you to complete the course in a specific amount of time. This can be troubling for some who do not learn as quickly as others, or for those who want to perfect one lesson before moving onto another. This can be frustrating to some and does not make it convenient or helpful.

For a comprehensive resource and a variety of guitar tips, Pro Guitar Tips offers a one-time downloadable program that covers basic lessons such as reading tablature and playing chords. For those with more experience, the program provides ways to improve the skill with advanced chord-playing, arpeggios, and lead tricks. The program was created by Pete Williamson, a professional musician with more than 20 years of experience. He performs with multi-platinum artist Pete Murray and rock band Mammal. Beginning Guitar

by Michael Malega
I hope that the following article will help you to better understand this topic.
Music is its many forms provides enjoyment for people and learning to play guitar is just one way that you can have this pleasure for yourself and others. Before you can actually play the guitar properly though, you will need to have beginning guitar lessons as well as a guitar!

On the face of it, as an instrument the guitar doesn't seem to have much to recommend it to someone who's sounding to purchase this instrument. However, all this can change from the very first act you begin your first guitar lessons. Radical guitar players should not become discouraged even before they take their first lessons.

These lessons are ones where you will have the opportunity of learning the theoretic aspect of guitar playing as well as being able to pluck at the strings to produce a pleasant sound.

You will be able to find instructors who can give you settle down guitar lessons from your local community and also from your local newspapers. These are not the only way that you can learn about beginning guitar lessons. There are numerous books and audio tapes and CDs which will also provide this facility to you.

As with all of these origin guitar books, CDs and lessons, the main fact that needs to be understood is that you should feel comfortable and confident of your power to learn and play the guitar. Without this assurance you will not be able to understand the diverse instructions that you are given in your guitar lesson.

For this conclude if you are learning to play the guitar from an teacher you should be able to ask the teacher for advice and help if you feel that you are missing out on some point of the lesson.

Since you can't ask books or audio or Videodisk lessons for help you should be able to look or listen to the various steps and see where you fingers should be placed on the guitar and what chord each guitar string signifies.

Thank you for taking the time to read my article it is greatly appreciated. Try searching through my other articles.

Online Guitar Lessons

by Kyle
Online Guitar Lessons

Hey everyone. Recently I have been looking for a good online site that offeres Online Guitar Lessons. Personally I really didn't like the idea of traveling back and forth to someone's house or music store to be taking guitar lessons. Plus I have never really liked the idea of face to face lessons either since I was always afraid of messing up. I thought to my self "why not try online lessons?" So I said yeah why not? First off I had to make sure to find a true legit online lesson site. I found several that offered "Free" lessons but after looking at those I just laughed and said no wonder they were free. I knew I'd probably have to pay for some Online Guitar Lessons but either way online or offline I would be paying. A friend of mine told me about a great site for Online Guitar Lessons. I know from a lot of message boards out there that there are ton's of people looking for a good Online Guitar Lessons site. So I am here to give you my review of Online Guitar Lessons and hopefully will help some people out. I know the name may sound generic but that is actually what kinda drew me in... Website - Here

Learning Guitar Can Be Fun and Challenging A lot of people's misconception on playing guitar is that they try to take on too much at once and eventually fail. I was real big on trying to solo at first but that would just never workout. haha. I knew I needed to get down the basics first and then start working my way up to more intermediate and advanced techinques. With Online Guitar Lessons you will be starting with the basics every guitar player needs to know. Everything from strumming, different techniques of picking, chords, tuning (of course) and all sorts of other basics. For me I knew most of those already but I needed to take it a step further and really start learning some new techniques such as how much pressure to exert on the fret board, how those different strumming patterns can affect the tone you get, and most importantly (beleive it or not) would be the stretching exercises before you start playing. They help big time for getting your hand and fingers stretched before playing and you will notice a dramatic difference. There is a MASSIVE list of things you will get with Online Guitar Lessons. You also get 5 bonuses for ordering that include a chord dictionary, a scale tool generation software, an inside action plan for writting your own songs and he will even give you 5 of his own jam tracks that you keep or do whatever you want with them. Here are some of the areas that are included in with Online Guitar Lessons. Within these areas are TONS of tips and helpful looks at what you need to do for those areas.

- The Basics (I listed some already but not all of them).

- The Short Cut Secret I Use To Pick Up New Guitar Chords In Minutes.

- The Best Ways To Developing Lightning Fast Hands.

- The Best Secrets To Connecting Your Scales To Your Songs.

- Saving Time By Learning How To Put Out Solo's Faster.

- Learning How To Read Notes.

I can't even begin to say how amazing these lessons are. I have easily gained at least 2 years of experience (based on how I WAS learning) in only about 90 days. The lessons themselves will last you around 17 minutes a day. The only difference here is that you won't be needing to travel from place to place to get your lessons. You can get them right from your computer any day you want. You can even choose to do more lessons per day if you want but I would strongly reccomend practicing the new techniques before moving on because if you don't work hard enough in one area, it will come back to hurt you later (trust me, I know..).

Bottom Line - Online Guitar Lessons Through This Site Are Nothing Short Of Awesome! I was tired of being frusterated in my band whenever I was having trouble in certain spots like soloing or other areas and my bandmates were too. I heard about this site from a friend of mine at work and I was blown away after I had purchased this. I said...I could be paying $30 a day for lessons from some guy at a store or his home plus the outrageous price of gas would be putting me in a hole quick! Online Guitar Lessons costs $49.95 and they offer a 90 day refund if you are unhappy. Since they offered a refund I decided to at least try it for a while to see if it helped me any. I was pleasently suprised to find it worked wonders. I think that my local instructor probably didnt know half of these techniques and still he would try to rip people off for only half the knowledge you get from this lesson plan. I have reccomended this to every musician I know and now I am reccomending it to all the musicians on the Internet that are looking to being guitar playing or improve. Online Guitar Lessons I would give a 5/5 simply beacuse it works.

Guitar Lesson: Play Country Licks In D

by Peter Edvinsson
Have you ever wondered about how to get that ringing country sound from your guitar. In this guitar lesson you will learn some country licks based on a combination of fretted notes and open strings.

We will first take a look at a D-major scale in one octave:

0/4 2/4 4/4 0/3 2/3 0/2 3/2

How do you read this guitar tablature?

The first digit indicates which fret to play. The digit after the slash gives you the string to play.

2/3 means that you are to play the second fret on the third string.

We will now try to figure out a way to play the previous scale with some ringing open strings. Let's try this one:

0/4 7/5 4/4 0/3 7/4 0/2 6/3 3/2

A little bit confusing at first of course. If you are used to the ordinary way of playing scales you have get used to finding higher notes on lower strings.

I suggest that you learn the scales and licks by heart by learning just a few notes at a time until you get a little bit more used to this new way of finding notes.

You can probably figure out a left hand fingering that works for you. The principle is to hold the notes as long as possible to let them blend together.

But, what about the right hand?

You can pick the notes with a pick of course. It's a little bit awkward, though trying to play notes on different strings in succession. Many country pickers use one of the following approaches:

1. Hybrid picking. This means that you hold the pick as usual but also use the middle finger and ring finger along with the pick. This opens for an easier way to play notes in rapid succession even if the are on different strings.

2. Finger picking. You can play the notes with your bare fingers using your thumb, index, middle finger and ring finger. You will miss the crisp sound from the pick but can compensate this with the freedom of having four finger to use and growing calluses on your finger tips!

3. Using a thumb pick. A little bit like hybrid picking but with the advantage of having four fingers at your disposal and a crisp sound from the thumb. Not bad! Not all guitarist like this approach though. But it has to be tested! I have bought a couple of these thumb picks but they have a tendency to dissappear! I guess it's because I can't keep them in my hip pocket because of the pain sitting down!

Let's test a few country guitar licks in the key of D:

I will put the suggested chord in front of the lick:

(A7) 9/6 0/4 7/4 0/3 7/4 0/2 7/3 0/1 6/3 0/2 7/4 0/3 (D) 4/4

Yes, you have to learn it by heart, a couple of notes at a time!

The last lick will use both hammer-ons and pull-offs.

I will put h and p between the actual notes.

(A7) 3/5 h 4/5 0/4 0/3 2/3 p 0/3 4/4 0/3 2/4 p 0/4 3/5 h 4/5 4/0

Don't play faster than your present technical skills allow you to but of course you have already figured out that the last lick is supposed to be played fast, maybe lightning fast!

Guitar Lessons Online

by Peter Finlay
Learning to play the guitar is a challenging but rewarding pursuit, demanding practice and determination over a number of years to play to standard. For many, playing the guitar is out of reach, as the simply lack the time necessary to learn to play. Fortunately, this is now changing, thanks to the Internet, and the availability of guitar lessons online. Now, from the comfort of your own home in your own time, you can learn guitar through online tuition from some of the world's finest tutors, taking advantage of their own brand of teaching to improve your technique. But how easy is it to learn guitar online, and is it as effective as face-to-face tuition?

Traditionally, guitar tuition has been conducted through direct one on one correspondence, or in a group scenario, which has been thought to provide the optimum level of interaction necessary to perfect technique. Alternatively many people learning the guitar have taken to self-teaching methods, through a book or self-teaching course, and this too works well for some people, albeit results tend to take longer to show. The Internet, as a teaching platform, provides a hybrid of these two methods, with the visual and aural tuition of an instructor, and the flexibility and affordability of a book. Usually in the form of videos, online guitar lessons aim to actually show students what to do and how to do it - if you don't pick it up, simply replay the video until you do.

This is beneficial in as far as flexibility is concerned, and indeed in terms of money. If you find yourself sticking at a particular point, it's easy to replay the video to get over that hurdle. However, if you've got a guitar tutor charging $40 an hour, a sticking point can be quite expensive. With the video, you can repeat the lesson over and over again until you manage to progress at no extra cost and in your own time. For the busy professional looking for a hobby, learning to play the guitar online is a great way to fit in some relaxation around your schedule.

With online guitar tuition, you get the benefit of a visual display of how to play the guitar, whatever genre interests you. However, online guitar lessons lack the direct correction of a tutor. If you're not succeeding, there's no one over your shoulder to tell you why. It's up to you to take the initiative and work out where you're going wrong. On the plus side, the minimal cost and flexibility will save you time and money in the long run, so the lack of correction may not be so much of a deterrent.

Online guitar tuition is an increasingly popular way to pick up the instrument, and to learn how to play competently. The ability to learn as you like from your own home, and the fact that the tuition is significantly less expensive than one on one lessons makes it an attractive option for students looking to learn the guitar.
